“The human brain is a cultural artifact. We don't load culture into a virgin brain like software loading into a computer; rather, culture helps to wire the brain. Brains then become carriers of culture, helping to create and perpetuate it.” - Lisa Feldman Barrett, How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain

Concerning the Officer involved shootings, I think the culture of our officers are a major contributor to these needless deaths. You alluded to part of the problem being the fear of black males by police officers. But I think a deeper problem actually exists. Police officers enter into discussions with other officers during their daily work life about under what circumstances will lead them to discharge their weapons. Some of these discussions leads to a path in the mind of a predisposition to shoot. This is solely my own view. The bottom line is that there have been numerous shootings that are terrible tragedies that need never have occurred. My opinion is that we need not only a change in use of force policies but also the very selection practices of police officers themselves. I just “felt” I should say something.
